According to Stanford psychologist Carol Dweck, your beliefs play a pivotal role in what you want and whether you achieve it. Dweck has found that it is your mindset that plays a significant role in determining achievement and success.
I have been waking up with negative thoughts about my hip and just the day in general. Frustrated that I can’t do a certain movement like I used to. I have felt sidelined by this hip issue now since training for the half marathon. Could it be that I am sitting way more than I used to and not stretching?
MIND-SET is a real thing. I remember my time as a basketball player and thinking that there was not a better point guard out there than me. Heck I am 5’1 and didn’t care who I guarded, I was going to stop them. Nor did I ever think my team would lose.
That mindset made me stand taller, walk around with broad shoulders, and speak with a passion about the game. Where did that confident little short sh$t go?
Think about a time when you felt like your mindset was being challenged. Were you given a project and you either laced up your bootstraps and dug in or did you talk about how challenging this was and that you would never be able to accomplish the task! Which one are you?
The first is a growth mindset. If you just lace up your bootstraps and say let’s go, then you have more of a growth mindset. People with that mindset are most likely to succeed and show greater resilience than those with a fixed mindset. So what is a fixed mindset? This is someone who thinks they are just born with certain qualities and that they are unchangeable. A Fixed mindset believes that there was nothing they could do to tackle a problem that was out of the reach of their knowledge and abilities.
So as I write this to you, I find that my mindset needs to change!
Here are 7 effective ways you can upgrade your mindset:
1. Change your Self-Talk
The conversations that you have with yourself are so important and a direct reflection of your mindset. If you tell yourself that “you aren’t good enough” then your thoughts will create your reality and hold you back. Upgrade your mindset and tell yourself “I can do this or I got this.
2. Change your Language
Change the way you talk to other people. Avoid things like “ I am always like this” or “this is just who I am.” Instead, make it a habit to talk about the things that are going well in your life. Just try it.
3. Determine the mindset you need and act as if
Pick a goal you want to achieve and ask yourself: “Which mindset do I need to achieve this goal?” and “Which mindset do people have that was successful at this goal?”. If you want to be healthy and fit, start talking about it and thinking about what healthy and fit people are doing, and then act on it!
4. Learn & Apply
Read books from great minds to understand and adopt their thinking. Read books about how the mind and brain works.
5. Surround yourself with people that match your desired mindset
Enough said, if you want to be more successful, hang out with people who have a drive to achieve greatness.
6. Create new habits to support your mindset change
Start adding powerful habits each day and then reinforcing them with action. I can’t wait to see you do this and change the way you think.
7. Jump out of your comfort zone
If you put yourself in situations that challenge you, you have no other choice than to rise to the occasion and upgrade your mindset. It becomes a necessity to survive.
So ask yourself “What situations can I put myself in that will require me to operate on a higher mindset?”. Basically, the idea is to engineer your environment to train your brain!
HAPPY MINDSET, MY FRIENDS!
